The Triumph (of the Future)

Project in progress in collaboration with Icetrip Estévez.

Soon after  the residence of Rural Interaction in Baja California Sur, organized by Santiago M. Bringas, we found in the region, several scenarios of interruption to the development that called our attention to generate another work.

El Triunfo is a small town 45 minutes south of La Paz, which had a mining boom from the 19th century until the early 20th century. For a time it was the most important city of the region and its constructions confirm it. The exploitation of natural wealth was due to foreign investment; English, French, Italians, and Americans arrived there carrying their customs, clothing, furniture and even food. As in other regions, a large number of Chinese people also came to work in the mines. So that the town has several cemeteries according to the nationality of the deceased. The mining company stopped operating in 1912 and since then came the decline of the city reaching a certain abandonment until its current recovery as a tourist destination. This interruption of the prosperity of a people interested us as a frame to the development of works with the settlers. The first idea was to intervene the Music Museum that houses 14 pianos that were donated and gathered together with other instruments and sound machines that form a didactic collection that clearly shows the relationship between the economic, technological and cultural flourishing. A museum is like a showcase that preserves. How to intervene without touching? It was a call to silence, the one that surrounds the immense chimney called La Ramona (by the saint patron of its inauguration day, and it is said that  was designed by Gustav Eiffel) and it travels by moments its streets now cobbled, full of houses in ruins and some others preserved, or new mansions owned by Americans in love with the undoubted appeal of the place.

The plan is to visit and explore the site, conduct interviews and generate opportunities for activation based on the impressions collected in interviews, talks, drifts and other information available that throws us much material to design activities and manufactures.

From the name, the town of El Triunfo, establishes its mark very high. The ultimate goal of competitiveness, conquest, struggle and challenge. Getting there ans survive must have been a challenge as it is now. What can be produced in such oven (as the name recalls: California means Hot oven or forge). A village programmed for wealth, like so many others throughout Mexico that drained minerals for the invention of empire.

We have proposed to the local subdelegate the realization of sound art and animation workshops for children and adolescents both in the facilities of the public library and in the Museum of Music in 2018. We will make projections of animated shorts in public places as well as recordings of collective actions in different spaces to form a documentary. We have register field recordings to collect both soundscapes and a sound library to use with runtime devices in future presentations.

All these activities are part of the national program of actions for the dissolution of apathy and are realized thanks to the support of the National Fund for Culture and the Arts of the Ministry of Culture in its program of the National System of Art Creators.
